DEPARTMENTAL PROFILE
INTRODUCTION
Science stream of Sao Chang College was started in the
year 2005 with Zoology as one of the elective subjects. The department started
with one faculty, Dr. Lilongchem Thyug. Later in the year 2009, appointment of
one Laboratory Assistant for two departments (Zoology and Botany) and another
faculty Mr. K.K Chim Khiamniungan was made. In the year 2009, the department
was shifted to the present building, earlier the department was located in arts
block.
A separate department laboratory room was allocated in
2013 providing adequate facilities to conduct both Theory and Practical classes.
At present there are 2 (two) full time faculties. The department has an
established Freshwater aquarium, rearing of selected beneficial insects and
Drosophila culture aimed to impart basic Zoological knowledge and equip the
students with basic tools and techniques.
Zoology
as a discipline in Science presents the student with various study area
starting from simple single cell to higher more complex organisms. It
integrates animal system and its interaction to other processes for growth and
sustenance. Students will learn about taxonomy, behaviour and adaptation,
biochemistry, biotechnology, ecology and wildlife, biodiversity conservation, endocrinology
and physiology, fishery, genetics, immunology, parasitology, etc; Regular
practical class involving fieldwork, projects, seminar, workshop and
presentations provide opportunities for skill development and make informed
career choice in the field of interest.
